Brown Striped Handwoven Wool Rug, Mahal Series

The yarn was dyed by hand, and that is why no two browns in this rug are quite the same tone: Mahal Series Handwoven Line-Pattern Brown Rug, 172 × 241 cm (5'8" × 7'11"), a squared grid of horizontal and vertical bars over cream, tied with the Anatolian double knot on a cotton foundation with a wool surface. Within each square the bars run one way, and in the square beside it they turn ninety degrees, so the field reads as order and movement at the same time — the same trick a parquet floor plays.

Brown moves from bark to biscuit across the piece because the dye lots were mixed by hand rather than metered, and those shifts are the visible difference between this and an industrially produced rug. Earth tones and a wool surface together make a room feel less furnished and more inhabited. Weavers tie the Anatolian double knot, the symmetrical knot used across Turkish weaving, which holds the pattern square and stiffens the fabric.

02What the yarn is

Cotton below, wool above, and a measured amount of synthetic yarn added to hold the structure — declared rather than papered over with the word natural. The pile is not thick, and it is firm rather than soft: the rug keeps its shape, does not shed much, and the low surface gives dust less to settle into.

03The mark of slow weaving

Professional washing. Handwoven with the Anatolian double knot, on a cotton foundation. Wool surface, plus a trace of synthetic yarn for durability. 172 × 241 cm (5'8" × 7'11"). Squared grid of brown bars on cream, turning direction square by square. Hand-dyed yarn, so the browns vary naturally from one area to the next. A firm, thin pile that holds its shape and vacuums easily. Send it out for washing rather than treating it at home. It is a modern drawing made by a method that is not modern at all, and that tension is the whole appeal.
