01From ground to pile

One piece. Because the yarn was dyed in small lots the yellow is not one yellow. It moves half a tone across the width, and the red lines shift with it, which is the difference between a woven stripe and a printed one.

02After the color

Pastel and earth tones sit under both colors and keep the whole thing from going bright. A rug this size can hold a full seating group or run the length of an office, and in either place the stripes pull the eye down the long axis instead of into the middle. The double knot — two loops around a pair of warps, the technique Anatolia gave the trade — is what makes the surface firm.

03What Wool does

Wool covers all of it. Underneath, the foundation is cotton, plus a little synthetic yarn to stop the structure stretching, and the house names that content instead of leaving it out. The hand is hard rather than plush, which is why the rug keeps its shape and why the pile leaves so little depth for anything to work into. A rug washer, never a domestic machine.
