The story of this rug

At 250 × 300 cm (8'2" × 9'10") this covers the floor of a full sitting room and still works under a dining table: Gray Abstract Hand-Knotted Wool and Bamboo Viscose Rug, Maison Series, cream brush strokes laid broad and loose across a gray ground, knotted over cotton in India. A single piece. The strokes are wide and they move; nothing on the surface is drawn tight and there is no repeat to find.

01Color that shifts through the day

Near the middle a few peach and dark gray notes come up and give the gray somewhere to go — without them the field would be handsome and flat. Getting two accents that small right at this scale is most of the reason the series turns up in houses that have been through an interior architect.

02How it feels underfoot

Beside a gray-mauve velvet chair and warm peach cushions it settles without effort, and at the foot of a bed it does the quieter version of the same job. Cotton takes the warp and the foundation both. Wool and bamboo viscose are knotted over it, with the bamboo viscose held back for the pattern, where it lifts the cream strokes half a tone and puts some distance into a flat field. Density is the thing the house is proudest of in Maison, and it is what you register first if you lift a corner of it.

Cleaning goes to people who handle hand-knotted work; done properly it does the rug good, but it is not a job for a bathtub. Hand-knotted in India, at a density the house treats as the point of the series. Cotton warp and cotton foundation, with wool and bamboo viscose knotted over them. Broad cream brush strokes on gray, with peach and dark gray near the center. Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
