Wool, cotton and viscose: color that drifts rather than draws

On the surface: Wool, Natural. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Modern pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is colorful, gray.
This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Wool, cotton and viscose: color that drifts rather than draws
Multicolor Abstract Handwoven Wool Rug, Aren Series — wool, cotton and viscose worked by hand in India, 246 × 308 cm (8'1" × 10'1"), with color arriving in drifts across the field rather than in drawn figures.
Better than seven and a half square meters of it, which puts the whole seating group on the rug. There is one. Abstract is the house's own classification, and it is the honest one: no named motif family is being traced here and no historical drawing repeated.
What the rug has instead is color, several at once. A ground of mixed tones behaves differently under changing light from a single-color one — rather than the whole floor shifting at dusk, one tone comes forward and another drops back, so the piece is not quite the same object at nine in the morning and at ten at night. Made by hand in India for Halıcızade. The word aren picks out one bright grain among the sand of a desert, and that is the series it names.
Three yarns are declared: wool, cotton and viscose. Wool gives the pile its body, cotton belongs to the structure underneath, and viscose is a cellulose fiber that takes light more sharply than wool does, which is where any shine in the surface comes from. A hand-made piece at this width is never an exact rectangle, and we would sooner put that in writing here than leave it to be found with a tape measure at the wall — allow a little slack. Handwoven in India; wool with cotton and viscose declared alongside it. An abstract field in mixed color, with no repeating motif family behind it. 246 × 308 cm (8'1" × 10'1") — 7.6 square meters. Viscose is a cellulose fiber and returns light more sharply than the wool around it. The rug will not be exactly square at this width; allow for it when measuring. Professional washing. One piece only. In ten years the pile will have flattened where the sofa stands and the color will have settled a shade, and neither of those is damage.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
