Orange Mamluk-Pattern Round Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Tempus Series

Octagons, stars and radiating panels rather than flowers: that is what makes a Mamluk drawing recognizable, and it is what this round wool rug carries — orange over warm beige and brown, loom-woven on the Aegean coast of Türkiye, 160 cm across (5'3").

01The tone of the ground

Mamluk rugs were woven in Cairo under the Mamluk sultans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and their geometry looks like nothing else made in the period. The old Mamluks were built in concentric rings out of a small vocabulary of shapes, and the version here keeps that structure while replacing the sombre reds and greens with orange and the browns and beiges around it.

Circular format and concentric drawing suit each other, so the pattern finishes where the rug does rather than being cut off at an edge. The warm transitions between orange, beige and brown are what give the surface its movement; there is no strong contrast anywhere in it, and it is easier to live with than the description suggests. The face is wool, over a cotton warp.

03Coming off the loom

A special loom sets the pile at a density close to hand-knotting, which is where the weight comes from and why it passes for a knotted rug at a glance. What separates them is the way the body of the rug was built, not the way it sits underfoot. Medium in thickness, closely worked, and easy to keep. 04Up close to the pattern

Their designs are geometric and concentric, built from octagons, eight-pointed stars and radiating panels, and they are unusual for using very few colors across a very complex drawing. Is a round rug harder to place than a rectangular one? It is different rather than harder.
