Red Floral Round Loom-Woven Tencel® Rug, Zara Series

Round, in three diameters — 120 cm (3'11"), 160 cm (5'3") and 200 cm (6'7") — with floral motifs worked over a red ground. Zara is Halıcızade's loom-woven line, made in Oushak, the old weaving town of western Anatolia; this piece is Tencel® on a cotton foundation, with no wool in it. A circle changes what a rug does in a room.

01Where it is laid

There are no corners to line up with the furniture, so it sits under a coffee table or in the middle of a seating group and softens the geometry instead of reinforcing it. The red is a full, warm red rather than a brick or a rust, and the flowers on it are drawn from Anatolian village weaving rather than from a European floral.

02The mark of slow weaving

At 120 cm it is a spot under one chair; at 200 cm it takes the whole center of a small room. A loom sets the warp and the pile; women in and around Oushak knot the fringes one at a time, which is why no two Zara rugs finish identically.

03How it feels underfoot

Tencel® over cotton gives the surface a soft, faintly bright hand rather than a woolly one, and it wears well for a rug of this price. The technique sits between the two things buyers usually compare: it has the hand of a knotted rug and the cost of a woven one.
