The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Roses and leaves on beige, and the fiber is goat not sheep
Mohair is the fiber here, not ordinary fleece — the long, lustrous hair of the Angora goat, which is spun less often for rugs because it costs more and behaves differently underfoot. This is a handwoven mohair rug, 241 × 305 cm (7'11" × 10'0"), made in Türkiye, with Oushak floral motifs on a beige ground in pale green and a soft burgundy. Flowers and leaves run across the field in a loose repeat rather than a strict grid, and the border carries the same forms in a narrower rhythm.
The two accent colors are held well back: the green is a washed-out celadon, the burgundy nearer to dried rose than to wine. Because mohair takes dye with more transparency than sheep's wool, the tones sit in the fiber instead of on it, and the surface has a faint luster that moves as you cross the room.
Against walnut, oak or any dark polished wood the beige warms up noticeably. The rug was knotted by hand, loop by loop, and mohair is the reason it feels the way it does — softer than a standard wool pile, with a slight spring rather than a dense flatness. Mohair fleece is not widely used at this scale, which limits how many pieces of this kind exist at all.
One thing to weigh before it arrives: a lustrous pile of this type will hold the impression of furniture legs, and the marks take time to lift. Cleaning is a job for a rug wash house, not a domestic machine. Handwoven in Türkiye in mohair — the fleece of the Angora goat. 241 × 305 cm (7'11" × 10'0"), sized for a full living room or a dining table with chairs pulled out. Oushak floral drawing, flowers and leaves in pale green and dried-rose burgundy on beige. Soft underfoot with a slight spring, and a luster that shifts with the light. Heavy furniture will leave impressions in the pile. Suits traditionally furnished living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. Clean through a specialist rug wash house. Ten years on, this beige will read warmer and this green fainter, which is what mohair does and is not a fault.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
