Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is brown.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Double knots out of Afghanistan, flowers faded into brown
Chestnut shell is the closest name for this brown, and it decides everything else: a Retro Series handwoven wool rug, 150 × 197 cm (4'11" × 6'6"), wool over a cotton warp, double-knotted in Afghanistan, with floral drawing that has been faded back rather than printed sharp. The flowers do not announce themselves.
They surface out of the ground the way a line of writing surfaces from a page that has been washed, and from a few steps away the rug reads as a plain warm brown with something happening inside it. Light decides which: struck flat it goes matt, struck at an angle it takes on a short velvet sheen.
That behavior is not natural aging — it comes from the dyeing of the yarn and a wash given after the weaving, and Halıcızade says plainly that the finish is modern even where the drawing is not. Wool on a cotton warp gives a thin fabric that is nonetheless hard to wear out, and the double knot is what pushes the count high enough for floral detail to survive at this scale.
Each piece is worked by hand, which takes the kind of time that does not shorten. At 150 × 197 cm it suits a single seating area, the foot of a bed, or a passage. The washing is not a domestic job. Handwoven in Afghanistan, double-knotted, at a count high enough to hold fine drawing. A wool pile over a cotton warp: thin, strong, flexible. 150 × 197 cm (4'11" × 6'6"). Classical floral motifs faded back into modern brown tones. The shine and the depth of color come from yarn dyeing and a post-weaving wash. Matt from straight on, faintly velvet at an angle. Low shedding. One piece.
Washing by a specialist. Most people come to brown after trying everything else, and this one is deep enough to end the search.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
