The bright surface of viscose reflects light and changes with the kind of light. The same rug, two colors at two hours.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is anthracite.
This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Anthracite Oushak, bamboo viscose lighting the motifs
Oushak — Uşak on a Turkish map — is a town in western Anatolia, and the drawings that carry its name have been copied for four hundred years: large open medallions, wide spacing, a short list of colors.
Anthracite Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Safir Series: an Oushak field in anthracite, handwoven from wool with bamboo viscose over a cotton foundation, 160 × 240 cm (5'3" × 7'10"). What makes an Oushak drawing recognizable is what it leaves out.
The motifs are large, the ground between them is wide, and the palette is short — historically madder red with a soft yellow, and in the modern versions any two or three tones that will hold that spacing.
Anthracite is the current answer: dark enough for the open ground to read as depth, gray enough not to become a hole in the middle of a room. Handwoven in India for Halıcızade, from wool with bamboo viscose worked in, on a cotton foundation. Bamboo viscose is the house name for the cellulose filament sometimes sold as bamboo silk, and it goes into the motifs to give them a return of light that wool does not have. Safir is the Turkish word for sapphire, and the series keeps the Turkish.
An anthracite ground shows pale lint and a filament content shows a track; that is what the effect asks in return, and both brush out. Professional washing. Handwoven in India for Halıcızade. Wool carrying bamboo viscose through the motifs, over cotton. Oushak drawing — large motifs, wide open ground, a short palette. Anthracite ground, 160 × 240 cm (5'3" × 7'10"). Bamboo viscose is a cellulose filament, sometimes sold as bamboo silk; the house calls it what it is. Pale lint shows on anthracite and pressure marks show on the filament passages. Professional washing. A single rug in this size and color. What is an Oushak pattern? Oushak is the English name for Uşak, a town in western Anatolia.
Rugs drawn in its manner use large medallions, generous space between them and a deliberately short palette, and workshops far outside Anatolia have been copying it since the sixteenth century. Is bamboo viscose the same as silk? No. Bamboo viscose is a cellulose filament, spun rather than reeled from a cocoon, and it is sometimes marketed as bamboo silk. It returns light in a similar way, which is why it is used for motifs, but it is a different fiber and this house names it as viscose. Oushak drawings survived four centuries because they leave room to put furniture on, which is harder to design than a full field.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
