On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern, Classic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is gray, anthracite, blue, black.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
One dye lot carried from mid-blue down to near-black
Oushak motifs in blue: a Retro-series rug of 150 × 193 cm (4'11" × 6'4"), hand-knotted with a wool pile on cotton, its ground running from a clear mid-blue through gray and anthracite to near-black at the edges.
Tied in Pakistan and Afghanistan. One piece. The blue is not uniform and the rug is better for it: several values sit beside one another across the field, so the pattern seems to surface and submerge depending where the light falls.
Anthracite and black gather toward the borders and hold the whole thing down. Classical Anatolian motifs in a blue this cool would ordinarily look transplanted, yet the drawing is fine enough and the tonal range wide enough that they settle instead. The washing and coloring method the series uses is what draws this many blues out of one dye lot, and the same treatment leaves a low shine on the pile.
Cotton and wool are worked together into a thin, firm structure, with a small amount of recycled synthetic in the skeleton and none at all in the surface. Weavers in Pakistan and Afghanistan tie every knot. Sunlight moves a blue faster than it moves a brown, so keep this one off a south window. Hand-knotted in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, with a small amount of recycled synthetic yarn used only in the skeleton. Blue running through gray, anthracite and near-black across a single field. Classical Oushak motifs drawn at a fine scale. Low sheen from the finishing wash the series is given. 150 × 193 cm (4'11" × 6'4"), for an office, a study, or in front of seating. Professional washing; keep it away from strong direct sun. In a room with a lot of wood in it the blue is the one cool thing, and that is usually enough.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
