Sea-green ground, four yarns, each doing a different job

On the surface: Natural, Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is green.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Sea-green ground, four yarns, each doing a different job
Wool over cotton, with viscose and bamboo viscose held back for the pattern alone: this is a round Safir Series rug in sea-green, its Oushak motifs cut into relief by hand once the weaving was done.
A high knot count is what makes that possible — a drawing has to be dense before it can be sculpted. Made in India for this house, and only one was woven. Sea-green holds most of the field, pale enough to sit between burgundy wood and gray upholstery without arguing with either.
The Oushak motifs are classical in origin and modern in scale, and because the shears have taken a fraction off the ground around each one, the pattern stays legible even where the light is flat.
Cream and soft gray run through the drawing. Against dark walnut the green warms; against gray stone it cools and goes almost silver. Four yarns do four jobs. Cotton is the foundation, wool is the surface a foot meets, and viscose and bamboo viscose appear only in the motifs, where their sheen separates the pattern from the wool around it.
Carving is done with shears, motif by motif, and it takes longer than weaving an equivalent flat-faced rug would. The tight knotting is not ornament; a loose weave cannot be carved at all without fraying at the cut.
A rug washer should do the washing. Woven by hand in India for the Safir Series. Cotton foundation, wool surface, with viscose and bamboo viscose reserved for the pattern. Sea-green field with cream and gray in the drawing. Motifs cut into relief with shears once the weaving is done. Round — for an entrance, the center of a sitting room, or a bedside. Sits with burgundy woods as easily as with gray and cream. Professional washing. Single piece. Green takes longest to choose and longest to tire of, and this one is quiet enough to be lived with rather than admired.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
