Green Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Carved Round Wool Rug, Safir Series

India makes more hand-woven rugs than anywhere else, and this one comes from a workshop there that produces the Safir Series for Halıcızade alone: a round rug in pale green, Oushak motifs, cut into relief with shears.

01What the yarn is

Cotton in the spine, wool on the face you walk on, bamboo viscose in the drawing. A single example. The green is a pale water-green — cool, low in saturation, nearer gray than grass. Oushak's flowering repertoire has been redrawn to fill a circle, so nothing terminates in a corner and the eye keeps travelling.

02A line from the archive

What the carving contributes is depth: each motif sits a fraction proud of the field, and that fraction is enough to make the whole pattern readable from standing height without any strong contrast of color doing the work. Three fibers, three jobs, stated separately because they behave differently.

03How it feels underfoot

Cotton holds the structure, wool takes the wear, bamboo viscose gives the motifs a silk-like return of light. Knot density is high, which is a requirement and not a boast, since carving demands a pile tight enough to survive the shears.

04From the hand of the weaver

The workshop weaves the rug by hand, then carves it, then finishes it. It is at home with heavy carved wood and equally at home with flat, plain furniture, which is unusual and worth saying. One only. A round rug commits a room to a center, and this is a quiet enough green to be trusted with that decision.
