Turquoise Mamluk-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Şahzade Series

The Mamluk drawing was worked out in Cairo in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, under the sultanate the pattern is named for, and it looks like nothing else in the classical repertoire: concentric geometry, octagons inside squares inside octagons, assembled from a narrow palette.

01Coming off the loom

This is that drawing in turquoise, handwoven in wool in Afghanistan, 152 × 209 cm (5'0" × 6'10"). One piece. What makes a Mamluk recognizable is that it has no floral logic at all. Persian and Anatolian classical design grows outward from a stem; Mamluk design is assembled from shapes fitted into one another, closer to a mosaic pavement than to a garden, and it is filled with small papyrus and umbrella-leaf figures that repeat at a size you only see when you are standing on it.

02From the hand of the weaver

Turquoise pushes the geometry forward — a cool ground makes the outlines read harder, where the original red would have softened them. Woven by hand in Afghanistan; the label lists wool, cotton and a synthetic component.

03Where the Mamluk star comes from

A pattern this dense in its detail rewards a floor with light on it and is largely wasted in a dark corner, which is worth saying because turquoise is a color people tend to place defensively. It also needs room: put a heavy coffee table in the middle of a Mamluk and the part that makes it a Mamluk is the part that disappears. Professional washing. 04The tone of the ground

It is built from concentric geometry — octagons, stars and small filler motifs set inside squares — and worked in a deliberately narrow palette. Is turquoise a traditional color for this pattern? The original Cairo weavings kept to a tight range of red, blue and green, so a turquoise ground is a modern reading rather than a historical one.

05The mark of slow weaving

The geometry is the part that carries over unchanged; the color is the part that has been reinterpreted. Five hundred years after Cairo stopped weaving them, the arrangement still holds a floor better than most things drawn since. This rug belongs to the Şahzade Series.
