On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a red ground.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

Oushak is the name of a town in western Anatolia and of the weaving district around it, and copies of its drawing have been made all over the world since the sixteenth century. This is one of them, made honestly. Red Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — 271 × 371 cm (8'11" × 12'2"), woven by hand in Afghanistan, wool over cotton.
One piece. What travels out of Oushak is not one motif but a way of laying out a field: large forms, generous spacing between them, a border that frames rather than crowds. Red is the ground the pattern was drawn for, and at ten square meters there is enough of it to set the color of a room instead of accenting it.
Under a lamp the red deepens toward brown. In daylight through a north window it lifts, and the drawing comes clearer. Woven in Afghanistan, where the weaving culture runs centuries deep and where a great many Anatolian patterns are now made.
Underneath it the structure is cotton, and a modest amount of recycled synthetic thread is worked in with it for strength — declared here rather than left under the word natural. A rug of this scale takes months rather than weeks at the loom.
It is also too large for most rooms, which is better said before delivery than after: it belongs in a salon or a long hall, with the furniture standing on it rather than around it. Professional washing when it is needed, which will not be often. Handwoven in Afghanistan in the Anatolian Oushak drawing. Wool surface; the structure is cotton, worked with a modest amount of recycled synthetic thread. Oushak is a weaving district in the west of Anatolia, and its field layout has been copied for four hundred years. 271 × 371 cm (8'11" × 12'2") — a little over ten square meters. Red ground: browner by lamplight, clearer in north daylight. Months at the loom rather than weeks. Large enough that furniture should stand on it, not around it. Professional washing, infrequently. The pattern will still be in production in a hundred years; the only question is whether the room it goes into is big enough for it now.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
