A ratio near three to two, which is what 169 by 251 comes to, is what the Oushak medallion layout was drawn against: a central figure with room above and below it and the border running long down both sides. Square it up and the same drawing looks cramped.

02How it feels underfoot

This is the shape that suits a room longer than it is wide, laid with its length running away from the door, and it will make a corridor-shaped sitting room read as deliberate rather than as leftover. Handwoven in Afghanistan in the classical Anatolian manner, with three yarns on the label — wool, cotton, and a synthetic part the house does not conceal.

03Which tone on the ground

Red at four and a quarter square meters is not a background: it will set the temperature of everything else in the room, and any pink, orange or terracotta already in the space has to be checked against it before the rug arrives rather than after.
