Gold is the difference here: it warms the whole field and makes the pattern read from further away than the paler pieces in the series do. Tight knots hold the drawing and the gold-yellow runs through the flower centers and the border, so the eye picks up a rhythm along the edge before it reads the field.

02How it feels underfoot

Bamboo viscose is a cellulosic yarn spun from bamboo pulp; it takes light the way silk does, so in the flowers there is a definite gleam where the surrounding wool stays flat. Move around the rug and the gleam moves with you. It is the reason a pale rug of this kind does not go dull in a room with only one window. The construction is wool and cotton beneath, bamboo viscose in the pattern, tied by hand at a count high enough to keep the small Hereke forms intact.

After the loom, each motif is cut down around by hand so the drawing sits proud of its ground.
