Red and Olive Sivas Zara Handwoven Wool Runner, Anadolu Şal Series

Pomegranate-blossom red, olive green, night blue: the Turkish names its colors precisely, and they are what this runner is made of. This is an Anadolu Şal runner in the Sivas Zara drawing, 85 × 304 cm (2'9" × 10'0"), woven by hand at Anatolian looms in first-grade wool, with earth tones filling in between the three. Those colors are not there to agree with one another.

01The origin of the pattern

Each is set at its own strength, band after band, and the composition holds because the motifs are small and the registers narrow — nothing is given a large enough area to dominate. The result is busy without being tiring, which is the difficult trick in a rug this long.
