Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is gray.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Gray banded by the dye lot, 243 × 298 cm from Pakistan
Gray Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Ayan Series — a gray field carrying a classical pattern drawn as though it had already faded once, 243 × 298 cm (8'0" × 9'9"), hand-knotted in Pakistan, wool above cotton.
Ayan designs are woven once and never repeated, so this drawing exists in this coloring alone. Gray is the hardest ground to make a classical pattern work on, because the drawing loses the contrast that red or navy would hand it for nothing.
What the series does instead is dye the yarn in small lots, so a single nominal gray arrives at the loom in four or five strengths and the field bands faintly as the weaver works through the skeins. Rug people call that abrash. It is what keeps eight square meters of gray from going dead, and it is why the rug looks lived with before anybody has lived with it. Every knot is the symmetrical Gördes knot, wrapped round two warp threads and cut so that both ends are anchored — slower to tie than the alternative and much harder to work loose under a chair leg.
Wool takes the pile and cotton holds the warp and weft, which is why eight square meters of it does not go out of true. This is a rug for a whole room rather than a corner of one, and getting it flat needs a second pair of hands.
A rug specialist should do the washing. Hand-knotted in Pakistan on the symmetrical Gördes knot. Wool pile, cotton warp and weft. Gray ground with softened classical drawing over it. Yarn dyed in small lots, so one gray arrives in several strengths and the field bands. 243 × 298 cm (8'0" × 9'9"), about eight square meters. Eight square meters of dense wool; a second person is needed to lay it. No Ayan design is rewoven after it sells. Washing by a rug specialist. Gray floors usually go quiet after a year in a room, and the banding in this one is what stops that happening.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
