01Which tone on the ground

One piece. Cream on cream is the whole palette, and the interest has to come from somewhere else. Here it comes from that braided texture and from a faint striping running the length of the weaving. Under flat afternoon light the surface reads as one unbroken field of ivory; low sun at either end of the day finds the ridges and lays small shadows down them, and for an hour the kilim looks like a different object.

02Knot by knot, by hand

That is the trick, and it is a useful one in a conservatory or a bedroom. Loom-woven rather than knotted, which is what gives a flatweave a line this even and an edge this straight — the loom lays the structure down and the face is built over it.

03What the yarn is

Wool makes that face, cotton the ground beneath. At close to six square meters with no pile to speak of, it lies almost flush with the floor; a door will pass over it, and it can be rotated end to end each year so that no one stretch takes all the traffic.

04The mark of slow weaving

Pale cream underfoot is exactly as forgiving as it sounds, which is to say not at all: this is not the weaving for a hall that takes shoes. Washing belongs to a kilim specialist. Loom-woven in Türkiye as a flatweave kilim, wool face over cotton. No motif — the design is a braided texture with faint lengthwise striping. 195 × 305 cm (6'5" × 10'0"), close to six square meters.
