Nothing in the middle, everything in the border: cream Tencel®

The lyocell fiber is straight and smooth and breaks light by direction, the way silk does. The same rug reads in two colors from two sides.
Modern pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Nothing in the middle, everything in the border: cream Tencel®
All the drawing is in the border: a cream Heritage-series rug, loom-woven in wool with viscose in the motifs over a cotton foundation, whose middle is left plain and whose frame carries red, mustard and earth-toned motifs of the Anatolian kind.
It is made at 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10") and at 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"). An empty middle is a decision, not an absence. The wide plain field reflects light softly and gives the furniture standing on it somewhere to be, while the colored frame supplies the contrast and the character; between them they produce a composition that is calm at a distance and detailed close up.
The border motifs are small and repeat around all four sides, which is what makes them read as a band rather than as a row of ornaments. At 200 × 290 cm the frame falls outside a three-seat sofa and two chairs and draws the seating group together. It is woven in Kütahya, where machine technology and hand labor are used on the same rug — the structure mechanically, the finish by hand — and the result comes close to the look of a hand-knotted piece without being one.
Wool makes the face and viscose the sheen in the motifs; cotton in the foundation carries the strength. The series is made in small numbers, largely by women in the Kütahya district, so pieces vary slightly from one another. It sheds very little and is straightforward to vacuum. Woven on the Kütahya looms, where the body is machine work and the finish is not. Wool surface with viscose in the motifs, on a cotton foundation. A wide plain cream field with all the pattern held in the border. Red, mustard and earth-toned Anatolian motifs repeating around all four sides. Light sheen from the viscose, with very little lint release. Two sizes: 170 × 240 cm and 200 × 290 cm. Made in small numbers, so no two pieces are quite identical. Professional washing. Cream is the neutral people avoid because they expect trouble from it; a rug that keeps its color at the edges rather than in the middle is the version that survives a household.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
