Cream Carved Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A photograph will show you almost nothing of this rug, which is the first thing that ought to be said about it. The pattern is carved rather than colored: on a powder-toned off-white ground, freely curving lines follow the edge like a frame, and they are legible only through the change in pile height and the way light returns off it. Made by hand in India from a wool yarn carrying bamboo viscose and cotton, and measuring 200 × 295 cm (6'7" × 9'8").

From one angle the surface looks plain; from another it is fully worked. That means the position of the rug in the room is a real decision rather than a preference. Laid perpendicular to a window the raised lines catch daylight for most of the day and the drawing holds; laid parallel to it the surface stays flatter and quieter. A floor lamp throwing light sideways across it in the evening brings the pattern back after dark. What a tone-on-tone floor does for a room is set a ground and leave the color decision to everything else — a patterned upholstery, a strong wall, a large picture can all sit on it without competing.

Indian hand-knotting, in that same three-fiber yarn. A freely curving line is far harder to weave than a geometric one: a square or a straight edge advances by a fixed rule, while a free curve demands a new position on every row and gives the weaver nothing to work from memory. Carving it adds a second problem, because the pile height changes along the path of the line, and where the curve tightens the relief must narrow with it or the line thickens and the curve is lost. The bamboo viscose lends sheen to the carved areas, and where there is no color difference sheen and height are the only things making the pattern readable. Two drawbacks: a pale ground shows a spill plainly, and heavy furniture flattens carved work for good, so put felt pads under it. Dust gathers along the lines and wants regular vacuuming; once a year it should go out to be washed.
