Anthracite Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Örge Series

Anthracite is the near-black gray of hard coal, and on a floor it holds light instead of swallowing it — which is the argument for this Örge piece: a wool rug knotted thick by hand in India, with a geometric drawing worked into the loops themselves.

01The Wool on the surface

Wool at a high proportion, cotton beneath it, viscose in trace amounts. Five sizes, the largest 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), with an 80 × 300 cm (2'7" × 9'10") runner alongside them. The natural yarn carries a faint sheen, so the dark ground lifts wherever daylight falls across it and settles wherever it does not.

02The tone of the ground

That is the difference between an anthracite rug and a black one: a black rug is a hole in the floor, and this is a surface. Geometric figures are picked out in the same tonal family rather than in contrast, so they organize the field without decorating it.

03The mark of slow weaving

On a pale timber floor the contrast is the point of the room; among minimal, Scandinavian or rustic furniture it is the weight that stops everything else from floating. Indian weavers tie each loop by hand, and the knots are left large enough to see and to feel.

04How it is protected

It collects lint and dust, and the sensible way to think about that is as a trade: what the rug takes out of the air comes out of the house when you vacuum. Grit and crumbs settle down between the loops, so a busy kitchen is the wrong room for it. A vacuum head without a brush on it is the one to use.
