Wool weave
Wool is naturally hard to ignite; an ember landing on it goes out by itself without catching flame. That is why wool is chosen in front of a fireplace.

Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is blue.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Fifty years and more behind it: Kula blue, all wool
Over fifty years old, which puts it exactly on the line the trade draws between vintage and semi-antique: a hand-knotted wool rug from Kula, in Manisa province, 120 × 157 cm (3'11" × 5'2"), blue, with Anatolian figures across the field. One of one. Those age bands are worth stating plainly, since nobody issues them.
A hundred years or more is antique; fifty to a hundred is semi-antique; twenty to eighty is vintage; anything younger is new. They overlap on purpose, because a dealer judging by wear and color, with no document to check against, is making an estimate.
Fifty years is long enough for a rug to have flattened, for the pile to have shortened along the lines people walked, and for the blues to have gone one step quieter than they were dyed. Kula has lent its name to knotted rugs for a very long time — long enough that the word describes a type as much as a town in western Anatolia. This piece is wool, knotted by hand, and at a shade under two square meters it belongs at a bedside or in front of a hearth rather than under a table.
Blue is generally the color that survives best on rugs of this age. It should be washed professionally, and it will not need it often. Hand-knotted in wool at Kula, Manisa province, western Türkiye. 120 × 157 cm (3'11" × 5'2"), a little under two square meters. Over fifty years old — the vintage and semi-antique bands overlap here. Trade age bands: antique 100 years and up, semi-antique 50 to 100, vintage 20 to 80, and no authority issues them. Anatolian figures set across a blue field. Pile shortened where it was walked, which reads as a lighter patch. Professional washing, infrequently. A single piece. Fifty years on a floor is not very long for a rug, and it is a lifetime for anything else in the room.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
