The story of this rug

Closer to a woven blanket than to a rug in the hand: a handwoven Anatolian kilim in red wool, 110 × 167 cm (3'7" × 5'6"), flat, thin and reversible, made in Türkiye. Red carries the field and the geometry is worked over it in lighter wool. Red is the ground color Anatolian villages reached for first, and on a flatweave it does something a knotted rug cannot manage.

01Up close to the pattern

It goes on at full strength across the entire field with no pile to soften it, so the surface is dense and completely even in tone until a motif interrupts it. The figures here are stepped and hooked, drawn light against the red, and the border repeats a smaller version of the same shape.

02Knot by knot, by hand

In evening light the red deepens and the drawing recedes into it; by daylight the two separate cleanly. Wool throughout, woven by hand. There is no pile to hide behind, which means everything the piece is made of is on the surface, and where the color changes between two vertical blocks a small slit opens in the cloth. Those slits are ordinary in the technique. This is a weaving that wants a wall, a bench, the end of a bed or a rug beneath it rather than a bare hallway on its own.

03The mark of slow weaving

Washed professionally; nothing domestic. Handwoven wool kilim, made in Türkiye. Red field with stepped and hooked figures in lighter wool, and a matching border. 110 × 167 cm (3'7" × 5'6"). Flatwoven: no pile, and the same face on both sides. Small slits at vertical color changes are normal in this weave. Better layered over another rug or hung than left alone on a slippery floor. The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
