Brown Anatolian Handwoven Wool Kilim

The wool came first and the color followed it: a handwoven Anatolian kilim, 113 × 171 cm (3'8" × 5'7"), in browns running toward terracotta, flatwoven in Türkiye. Sheep wool for the warp and for the pattern, with nothing standing above it. Brown is the color a weaver gets nearest to for free, since fleece arrives in it, and a brown kilim is usually the one where the least dyeing was done.

01Up close to the pattern

The tones here run from a warm terracotta up into darker earth, and the figures sit between them rather than against them, so the whole surface holds together instead of splitting into pattern and background.

02Knot by knot, by hand

That is the quiet version of this weaving, and it goes into rooms where a red or a multicolored piece would take charge. Handwoven, wool on wool. What a brown kilim will not do is disguise a spill the way a busy multicolored one does — an even, mid-toned ground reads every mark, which matters if it is going under a dining table. It is thin and light, comes up with one hand for shaking out, and lies happily over a larger plain rug.
