Brown Anatolian Handwoven Wool Kilim

This kilim has no border. The motifs are scattered over a terracotta ground without a frame to hold them, and the drawing runs all the way to the edge. Most Anatolian kilims are framed by a border, which is why this arrangement stands out at first glance. The branch and tree shapes on the field are associated in kilim language with the tree of life, read in motif dictionaries as a sign of immortality. The ground is a terracotta that leans toward brown.

01Which tone on the ground

Thin branches in cream, red, pale blue and black rise across it, some ending in buds, some in leaves. Long feather-shaped figures made of multicolored stripes lie horizontally between them, and small cream squares and red-dotted flowers fill the gaps. No two branches are alike; each is drawn in its own sequence of colors. 113 × 171 cm (3'8" × 5'7"), about 1.9 square meters (roughly 21 square feet), with cream fringe at the short ends.

02At the loom in in Türkiye

Handwoven in Türkiye; the product record lists wool only. Without a border, the edge of the kilim meets the floor directly, and on light wood the terracotta draws a clean rectangle. The size suits the side of a bed or the floor in front of a daybed.

03The tone of the ground

Terracotta and petrol blue are opposites: a petrol-blue armchair stands apart from the kilim, and both colors look livelier. A rattan chair keeps the terracotta on the calm side. The feather figures gather in three clusters, upper left, center and lower right, and together they cut a diagonal across the ground.
