On the surface: Natural, Bamboo. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Knotted close enough to keep the damask curves, in powder pink
A damask is drawn the way a figured silk is drawn: figure and ground are the same cloth, differently lit. Pink Damask Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 163 × 240 cm (5'4" × 7'10"), does it in bamboo viscose over a field of wool and cotton, tied by hand on Indian looms across a cotton foundation. The pink is very pale, close to neutral. One piece. Damask names a habit of drawing rather than a single motif — stems and stylized blossoms, laid so the pattern surfaces and sinks again as the light moves.
The motifs are carried in bamboo viscose while the field around them is wool and cotton, and that difference in yarn is what produces the effect. The pink is a powder tone with almost no red left in it.
Beside white, ivory and pale walnut it stays a background; put it against a strong color and it will lose the argument, because it was never drawn to win one. The knot spacing is close, which is why the damask curves stay curves instead of breaking into steps.
The foundation is cotton; the surface is wool and cotton, with bamboo viscose reserved for the pattern. A pale ground shows what lands on it, which is the honest thing to say about this rug before anything else.
Washing is a job for a workshop, not for a bucket at home. Tied by hand on Indian looms, at close knot spacing. Wool and cotton across the field, bamboo viscose in the damask motifs. Cotton foundation under the whole surface. Powder pink, pale enough to work as a background rather than a statement. Sits well with white, ivory, light walnut and gold-detailed furniture. 163 × 240 cm (5'4" × 7'10") — a middling size for a living room or a bedroom. Professional washing; there is only this one. A decade of use will flatten the wool along the walking line, and the bamboo viscose in the blossoms will go on catching light exactly as it does today.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
