Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a gray, cream ground.
This rug is woven in India. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Damask in gray on cream, its sheen from bamboo viscose
A hand-knotted round rug, 195 cm across (6'5"), tied by hand in India, with cotton and bamboo viscose making the ground and more of the bamboo viscose carried through the damask figures, the pattern drawn in gray over cream.
This size exists once. Damask is a pattern name borrowed from cloth: a large, symmetrical leaf-and-flower figure repeating across a field, first woven in silk in Damascus and carried since into wallpaper, upholstery and rugs. On a floor it behaves differently from a small repeat, because a single figure can be large enough to count and a room only holds so many of them.
Gray on cream keeps the whole thing quiet — the drawing is legible at standing height and dissolves when you look at it from a chair. The knots are set by hand on Indian looms, and the bamboo viscose is where the light lives: it lies beside the wool and cotton with a different surface, so the figures separate from the ground by sheen rather than by contrast.
One honest note, and it is the house's own — no photograph gives a cream rug back accurately. Room light, the angle it falls at and which way the pile happens to be lying will all move the tone, and a cream that looks warm on a screen can arrive cool.
It is wipeable for accidents; the real cleaning is professional. Hand-knotted in India, over a ground of cotton and bamboo viscose. Bamboo viscose carries the damask figures, which is where the sheen sits. Round, 195 cm across (6'5"), cream ground with gray drawing. A circle has no direction and cannot be laid the wrong way round. Also made at 140 cm; this is the size held. The house says plainly that a screen will not give you the true cream. Wipeable, with professional washing for the rest. Round rugs work where a room already has a center, and this one softens a hard-cornered space without adding anything else to look at.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
