The surface uses Natural, Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Madder red banding lot by lot, Karakeçili wool from Balıkesir
Kök boya — root dye — is on this rug's label, which means the red came out of madder root rather than out of a chemical drum. Hand-knotted in wool by Karakeçili weavers in Balıkesir, western Türkiye, 153 × 251 cm (5'0" × 8'3").
Chest-kept: it was woven, folded and stored rather than laid down. Madder does not behave like a synthetic red. It goes into the wool at slightly different strengths from fleece to fleece and lot to lot, so a madder ground is never one flat field — it bands, it warms and cools, and over decades it moves toward brick rather than toward gray. That is the argument for it, and it is why a naturally dyed rug looks better at fifty years old than a chemically dyed one does at ten. The Karakeçili are a Turkmen group whose weaving is found across western Anatolia, and their drawing is bold rather than fine: large hooked forms, generous spacing, borders that do not fuss.
Wool in the pile and wool in the foundation. Natural dyes are not colorfast in the way modern ones are, and this is the honest limitation — keep it out of direct afternoon sun or it will fade, and fade unevenly, on the side that gets the light.
Professional washing, and tell the cleaner it is madder-dyed. What is kök boya? Kök boya means root dye and refers to natural dyestuffs, principally madder root for reds and indigo for blues.
It was the standard across Anatolia before synthetic dyes arrived in the late nineteenth century, and it is still used for village weaving where the yarn is dyed at home. Do natural dyes fade? Yes, and more readily than synthetic ones.
A madder red loses intensity in direct sunlight and shifts toward a warmer brick tone as it does. Rotating the rug end for end once or twice a year keeps the fading even, which is what makes an old naturally dyed rug look aged rather than damaged. Knotted by hand by Karakeçili weavers in Balıkesir, western Türkiye. Wool in the pile and wool underneath it — no cotton in the build. Madder-root red, banding slightly from lot to lot. Bold hooked drawing with generous spacing and plain borders. 153 × 251 cm (5'0" × 8'3"). Keep it out of direct sun; natural dye fades where the light falls. Chest-kept rather than used. Professional washing. A madder rug is the only kind that looks better in twenty years than it does on the day it arrives, and it gets there by being used.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
