Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads yellow, red.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Root-dyed wool from Çal, a yellow ground past its century
Over a hundred years, which is the line at which the trade stops calling a rug old and starts calling it antique. This is a hand-knotted wool prayer rug from Çal, in Denizli, 95 × 132 cm (3'1" × 4'4"), colored with kök boya rather than a synthetic bath, on a yellow ground.
Nobody issues these age classifications — they are trade usage, and this is how the house applies them. The house scale runs the other way about: new, then vintage across twenty to eighty years, then semi-antique across fifty to a hundred, and antique once the century is passed. The bands overlap because the trade's do. A prayer rug is drawn to be directional — a niche at one end, an arch that points, and a field kept comparatively plain inside it — and that is why the format has stayed small and portable for as long as it has existed.
Yellow is a difficult ground to hold over a century, because plant yellows are the first colors to shift, so a hundred-year-old yellow field is a real thing to have found. Wool is the only fiber in the record, pile and foundation both.
What a rug of this age carries with it is honest wear: the pile is lower than it was, the ends have been handled a great many times, and the colors have moved with light and washing. Those are not defects in an antique — they are the reasons it costs what it costs — but anyone wanting an even, unmarked surface should look at a new rug instead. Small pieces like this often end up on a wall or over a chest rather than on a floor.
Have it washed by someone who washes old rugs, and no one else. Hand-knotted in Çal, Denizli; wool throughout. Dyed with kök boya — root and plant dyes. Prayer-rug format: a directional niche at one end, plain field within. Past a hundred years, which is the trade's antique line; there is no issuing authority. 95 × 132 cm (3'1" × 4'4"), about 1.25 square meters. Age shows as lowered pile, handled ends and shifted color. Specialist washing only.
A single piece. What makes this a prayer rug rather than a small rug? The drawing does, not the material. A prayer rug carries a niche at one end that gives the piece a direction, and the field inside the niche is usually kept plainer than the border. The format has stayed small because it was made to be carried and laid down anywhere. At what age is a rug called antique? Here the word antique is applied once a rug passes its century.
Semi-antique covers the bracket from fifty years to a hundred, and vintage covers twenty to eighty. These are trade conventions with no issuing body behind them, and dealers draw the lines in slightly different places. A century of use is already in this one, and whatever it does next will be a small addition to a long record.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
