Gray Plain Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Nine sizes are made; the largest, at 250 × 350 cm, is 8'2" × 11'6", and the runners go to 90 × 500 cm (2'11" × 16'5"). There is no pattern.

01After the color

What there is instead is drift: the gray moves toward beige and then toward ivory across the field, the way stone does, and the tonal change is the only event on the rug. The knots are big enough to read from standing height, which puts a rustic texture into a room that may have none.

02From the hand of the weaver

It is not a plush rug — the hand is firm, and walking on it you feel where the work went. Knotting is done by hand in India, one knot at a time. The yarn is 80% wool to 20% viscose, and the viscose is what carries the faint light in the gray. At 2,800 g/m² this is a medium-weight rug, dense without being heavy to move, and the 12 mm pile puts it between a flat weave and a deep one.
