Multicolor Circle-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Nazar Series

Nazar is the Turkish word for the look that carries envy, and for the blue eye hung up to catch it. The series takes the name and not the emblem: this is a handwoven wool rug, 167 × 232 cm (5'6" × 7'7"), with multicolor circles across the ground, knotted loop by loop in Türkiye and drawn for Halıcızade alone. Circles overlap here rather than sit apart, and the colors change where they cross, so the field has depth without any shading having been woven into it.

It is a flat design that behaves like a layered one. The palette is warm on one diagonal and cool on the other, which means the rug looks like a different object from the two ends of a long room.

01What it sits well with

Beside minimal furniture it supplies the only movement in the space; against a classical arrangement it is the thing that makes the room current. Wool yarn, traditional technique, every loop set by hand.

02The origin of the pattern

The regional inheritance behind the placement runs through Isparta, Hereke and Sivas Zara, though none of those figures survive into the drawing — what came across is the sense of where to put a shape.

Weaving one takes upward of half a year. Strong color on wool holds for decades, but direct afternoon sun is the exception: give it a rug pad, turn it end for end once a year, and keep it out of a window's line.
