On the surface: Wool, Natural. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic, Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads black, colorful.
This rug is made in Afghanistan. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Vine work and medallions over red-brown, wool at a tight knot
Eight to ten months at the loom produced it. Multicolor Floral Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug — curling vine work and medallion forms drawn in navy, beige and earth tones over a warm red-brown ground, knotted by hand in wool, 196 × 272 cm (6'5" × 8'11").
A single piece at the end of all that time. The motifs interlock rather than repeat cleanly, so the field gives up something new every time it is looked at properly; the borders run rows of small flowers and geometric transitions that close the composition without raising their voice.
Red-brown is a difficult ground to place and an easy one to live with — at the far end of a room in the evening it goes nearly black, and in daylight it comes back warm and slightly dusty. The wool is soft enough to fold the rug down to parcel size, which says more about the yarn than any adjective could. Density is what this piece is really about.
A tight knot count is why it will keep its rectangle for decades and why the drawing stays sharp where a looser weave would let it blur; put a hand flat on the pile and the resistance is immediate.
The surface is wool throughout, and the shine in it belongs to the fiber rather than to any finish. It will take furniture standing on it without crushing under the legs. Have it washed professionally. Hand-knotted in wool over eight to ten months. Warm red-brown ground with navy, beige and earth-toned vine work and medallions. Small flower rows and geometric transitions in the borders. A tight knot count — the reason the rug holds its rectangle. 196 × 272 cm (6'5" × 8'11"), suited to a sitting room, a bedroom or an office. Takes furniture legs without crushing. Have it washed professionally. Ten years from now the red-brown will have gone a shade quieter and the navy will look as if it had always been that dark.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
