Black Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Old Anatolian wool, sheared short and taken down to black: a hand-knotted rug of 114 × 205 cm (3'9" × 6'9"), with the original motifs still legible under the color and a surface that answers light differently depending on where you stand. Woven in Türkiye, re-finished in Türkiye, and there is one. Black is rarely black on a rug.

01When you walk in

What the pile does is reflect at one angle and absorb at another, so a room with a single light source will show a bright half and a dark half of the same floor, divided along nothing in particular.

02Reading the motif

The old drawing works with that rather than against it: geometric, evenly spread, strong enough to read where the light falls and gone where it does not. In a pale room the rug becomes the darkest object in it and organizes everything around itself. Wool for the face, cotton for the frame.

03From the hand of the weaver

The dense knotting of the original weave is still there under the shortened pile, and it is the reason the surface feels firm rather than plush when you press it. Shortening the pile also makes it easier to keep — less depth means less to get into. It is thin, light and easy to lay flat. Professional washing when it needs it, which is not often. Originally knotted by hand in Anatolia; sheared, then over-dyed black. Wool for the face, cotton for the frame. Traditional geometric motifs, visible where the light hits and not where it does not. Dense original knotting under a shortened pile — firm rather than soft. 114 × 205 cm (3'9" × 6'9") — a study, a hall, the foot of a bed. Thin and easy to lay flat. Professionally washed, and seldom. One rug. A black rug in a white room is the least subtle thing anyone does to a floor, and it is almost always the right decision.
