Black Karabagh-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

01From the hand of the weaver

Knotted in Türkiye, 109 × 169 cm (3'7" × 5'7"), wool throughout, with colored tassels at both ends. Karabagh weaving is the floral end of Caucasian rug drawing, and its flowers are drawn open and round rather than stylized down to a hook.

02Where the Border comes from

Here they run out from the field toward the border in a widening arrangement, so the surface reads as a garden seen from above. Black is a difficult ground to keep from going flat, and what saves this one is the number of colors put on it: pomegranate red beside orange beside a gold with real yellow in it.
