The maker's one restriction is worth putting first — everywhere in a house except the kitchen. The design is only two things, a field and a frame, and it works because the two are so far apart in tone.

01Reading the motif

Cream carries no ornament at all; the border carries all of it. In daylight the field lifts toward ivory, and by lamp the frame drops from burgundy into something close to dark cherry, so the rug looks quieter in the evening than it does at noon.

02From the hand of the weaver

Viscose is worked into the border alongside the wool, which is what gives the red its shift rather than any second dye. Everything was done by hand on the loom in India, and the run was small — this design goes into Halıcızade's collections and no one else's. The pile is at the thickness people are used to underfoot, so the rug lies flat and does not curl at the ends.

03The Wool on the surface

Wool above, cotton below, viscose only where the pattern needs to catch light. A cream field in a kitchen would be a short-lived arrangement, which is why the house says to keep it out of one.
