Black Karabagh Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Wool over the entire upper surface, then cotton and a trace of synthetic yarn underneath it — that is the construction, stated the way the house states it. The rug is a hand-knotted Karabagh in black, 173 × 253 cm (5'8" × 8'4"), a little over four square meters, knotted in Afghanistan.

01Up close to the pattern

Floral forms, filed by the house under ethnic rather than classical drawing. One piece. Ethnic here is a real distinction and not a flourish: it means an angular, village-derived motif vocabulary rather than the curved, cartoon-drawn ornament of a court workshop. Motifs of that kind repeat in rows and hold their shape at any scale, which is why a Karabagh field can be enlarged to four square meters without the drawing thinning out.

02Knot by knot, by hand

At this size the black ground stops being a background and becomes an actual expanse — it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and a room with one north window will feel a shade quieter with this on the floor. Knots go in one at a time by hand across roughly 4.4 square meters, which is where the hours are.

03What the yarn is

Foundation yarn is cotton, chosen because it does not stretch under tension the way wool would over two and a half meters of length, and the small synthetic content is there for the same reason.

04Choosing the size

Two things to know before it arrives: a rug this size is heavy enough that moving it alone is awkward, and a black surface keeps no secrets about dust. Send it to a rug washer and to nobody else.
