Anthracite Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Anthracite over an old Anatolian weave, the color of slate after rain: a hand-knotted wool rug measuring 162 × 217 cm (5'4" × 7'1"), close to square, re-dyed and re-finished in Türkiye. Traditional motifs are still there under the darkness, readable at close range and nearly gone from across a room. Dark grounds behave badly in photographs and well in houses.

01After the color

This one changes with the angle of the light: flat and matt where the pile lies away from a window, lit and almost graphite where it lies toward one, so the surface never looks like a single sheet of color.

02Up close to the pattern

The old motifs are what stop it from being one. They give the eye somewhere to go at close range without asking anything of the room from a distance. Run a hand over it and the surface is faintly rough, not soft — that is what shearing an old pile down leaves behind, and it is worth knowing before it arrives.

03The Wool on the surface

Wool above, cotton in the structure below. The thinness that comes with shearing makes a rug of this size unusually easy to move and to lay under furniture, and a short pile gives a stain less to sink into. A rug washer, not a bucket.
