The story of this rug

Weaving has gone on at Uşak in western Anatolia since the fifteenth century, and the drawing that carries the town's name — Oushak, in English — has traveled a great deal further than its weavers ever did.

01At the loom in in Afghanistan

This is a Multicolor Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 155 × 219 cm (5'1" × 7'2"), tied by hand in Afghanistan in wool above a cotton foundation. A single piece. The Oushak manner is large in scale and open in layout — thin scrolling stems, wide flowerheads, forms placed symmetrically with room left around them.

02The geography of the weave

That is the opposite habit from the Afghan drawing usually made on these looms, where one small unit repeats until the field is full, and the two traditions meeting on a single rug is most of what makes this piece worth looking at twice.

03From ground to pile

The palette runs across several colors rather than settling on one ground, which is the older Oushak practice as well. Wool takes the pile and cotton the foundation, in the ordinary division of labor of a knotted rug.

04Comes from from Afghanistan

The pattern family is named for the Anatolian town and not for the place of manufacture, so it is worth saying outright that this rug was made in Afghanistan by weavers working in the Oushak idiom.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
