Cream Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Cotton Rug, Ferforje Series

Wrought iron is what ferforje means in Turkish, and the series borrows it because of the way its pattern is drawn — scrolled, thin and open, like ironwork seen against a wall. The rug is handwoven in India in cream, in cotton and bamboo viscose, and its field is deliberately faded. Bamboo viscose sits on the surface while cotton and wool carry the skeleton underneath, which is the house's own account of how the piece is built: the viscose gives the knots their shine, and the cotton keeps a large rug from moving.

01The feel of the surface

A faded drawing needs that shine more than a sharp one does, because the lines have been softened on purpose, and without something to catch light a pale cream field would simply look washed out. The underlying design is damask — the same scrolling repeat — worn back until the lines break rather than close.

02Reading the motif

It is made in long narrow lengths as well as room sizes, and a corridor is where the pattern actually earns its keep, since a scroll repeating along a length reads as movement instead of as a motif.
