Cream Floral Handwoven Wool and Silk Rug, Hanzâde Series

Hanzâde is a Turkish name built out of han and zade, born of the khan, and the series carries it. Cream Floral Handwoven Wool and Silk Rug, Hanzâde Series: a cream ground under a classical floral drawing, woven by hand in Türkiye, wool with silk through it, 129 × 164 cm (4'3" × 5'5"), and there is one of it. Cream is a demanding ground for a floral, because there is no contrast to hide behind. Every stem has to be drawn correctly, since a weak line on a pale field simply looks like a mistake.

01From ground to pile

The classical arrangement spreads curved stems and closed blossoms across the whole field rather than centering on one figure, so the rug has no obvious front, and it can be turned twice a year to keep the wear even. Wool with silk, handwoven in Türkiye. Silk is used here the way a painter uses a highlight — a few passes in the flowers, which then catch light the surrounding wool does not, so the pattern seems to float a little above the ground instead of sitting in it.

02Where it sits in the house

At 129 × 164 cm this is a small room rug: the foot of a bed, a reading corner, a pair of them either side of a bed. A cream floor in a house with a dog does not remain cream for long, and it is fairer to say that now than to let the first winter say it.
