On the surface: Wool, Natural, Silk. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is cream, beige.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pale green and earth over beige, with Bursa silk in the pile
Flowers move across the whole field here rather than sitting inside a frame: a wool-and-silk Oushak from the Harem series, knotted by hand in Türkiye, 171 × 227 cm (5'7" × 7'5"), earth tones and pale green scattered over a soft beige.
One piece. The middle is lightly ornamented and the edges are dense, so the eye travels outward and finds its detail at the border. Beige here is velvety rather than flat, and the greens and earth tones set against it turn classic Oushak drawing romantic instead of formal.
The flowers never resolve into a repeat you can count; the distribution keeps moving, which is what gives the surface its sense of flow. The yarn starts as unwashed Erzurum fleece, oily in the hand, and it is that oil which keeps the wool bright and slow to abrade.
Every knot is doubled, in the Anatolian manner, and doubling is why a piece this large occupies a loom for so long. Genuine Bursa silk runs through the pile as well; silk weaving at this scale has become uncommon in Türkiye, and the shine it puts into the flowers is what the extra labor is for. The looms belong to Çınar Halı, whose designs have been recognized internationally.
Care is simple and not negotiable: vacuum gently, and let a professional do anything involving water. Hand-knotted in Türkiye at Çınar Halı, Harem series. Unwashed Erzurum fleece, with genuine Bursa silk running through the pile. Every knot doubled, in the Anatolian manner. Floral drawing spread across a beige ground, densest at the borders. Earth tones and pale green, in soft transitions. 171 × 227 cm (5'7" × 7'5") — a living room, or a large bedroom. Vacuum gently; professional washing only. A single rug, not a run. This one is for people who like flowers and dislike bouquets.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
