Silk surface
A silk surface feels cooler to the hand and the foot than wool and leaves no sense of thickness. In rooms crossed barefoot the difference is immediate.

A silk surface feels cooler to the hand and the foot than wool and leaves no sense of thickness. In rooms crossed barefoot the difference is immediate.
Classic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Silk in the wool, gold and earth around a misted beige
The center is almost misted over, the way a window looks from the warm side. An Oushak in hand-knotted wool with silk through it, Harem series — fine florals in a wide border of gold and earth tones around a pale beige field, made in Türkiye, 173 × 229 cm (5'8" × 7'6").
A single piece. Cream and beige move into one another across the middle, and the light coming off it is thin rather than bright. The border does the announcing: a run of flowers in gold and earth, taken from shapes Oushak weaving has used for centuries and set out with more air around them than a classical rug would allow.
Put together, the plain middle and the worked edge give the piece both the quiet of a modern floor and the weight of an old one. Erzurum wool, greasy from the shear and spun in that state, is what the surface is made of.
The knotting is double, as Anatolia has always done it, and durability here comes as much from the hours as from the fiber. Bursa silk goes in with the wool and is where the faint depth in the color comes from. This is a Çınar Halı weaving. Do not put it under a chair that gets pushed back from a table, and do not let a domestic machine wet it. Hand-knotted at Çınar Halı in Türkiye for the Harem series. Erzurum fleece, greasy from the shear, with Bursa silk worked in beside it. Double knotting, as Anatolia has always done it. A hazy cream-to-beige field inside a wide gold and earth-toned floral border. 173 × 229 cm (5'8" × 7'6") — a seating group, or a bedroom. Silk marks under a dragged chair leg. A rug washer, when it needs one. There is one. Rugs that whisper are harder to weave than rugs that shout, and this one spends its labor on doing so.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
