Beige Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Harem Series

Unscoured Erzurum fleece — wool still carrying its lanolin when it reached the spindle — is the fiber this one is knotted from. A beige Oushak for the Harem series, tied by hand in Türkiye, large figures in a dark brown border around a light beige field, 200 × 271 cm (6'7" × 8'11").

01The tone of the ground

One piece. The beige is not flat. Golden undertones sit inside it and deepen or thin depending on where the light comes from, so the ground behaves like a surface rather than a color. Against it the dark brown border puts the big Oushak figures into hard relief, and a faint floral run through the center softens what would otherwise be a very formal piece.

02The mark of slow weaving

The motif family descends from Oushak weaving of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, drawn here with a modern hand. Made at the Çınar Halı looms, with two ties to every knot in the Anatolian way: twice the hours, and a pile that will not walk out of shape.

03How it feels underfoot

There is no silk in this one. Wool alone, which is why the surface reads matt and why it takes daily use better than a mixed pile would. Vacuum in the direction of the pile. When it eventually needs washing, a rug washer does it. Knotted by hand for the Harem series at the Çınar Halı looms. Erzurum fleece that reached the spindle unscoured, bright and long-wearing. All wool, no silk; a matt surface built for use. Anatolian knotting, doubled at every tie. Large Oushak figures in a dark brown border, with faint florals across a beige center. Golden undertones that shift with the angle of the light. 200 × 271 cm (6'7" × 8'11") — a full seating group, with room to walk around it. Professional cleaning, and not often. Wool spun in the grease keeps some of its shine for decades, so this beige will be a slightly different beige every ten years, and the change is worth watching for.
