On the surface: Wool, Natural, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads cream, beige.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Silk kept for the motifs, flowers thickening into a border
Powder and dusty rose worked into a beige ground, so that the flowers surface rather than sit on top of it: Beige Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Wool and Silk Rug, Harem Series, 167 × 229 cm (5'6" × 7'6"), knotted in Türkiye from Erzurum wool with Bursa silk through the drawing.
One piece. Beige is doing a job here rather than being a color choice. It spreads the light thinly across the whole field, and against that the floral forms in the middle come up in powder and dusty rose, half-dissolved into the ground they are drawn on. Their arrangement undulates slightly instead of marching, which is why the field reads as moving.
At the edges the flowers close up into dense bands and turn into a frame, so the quiet center has something firm around it. Çınar Halı wove it. The yarn is spun from Erzurum greasy fleece, and the knot is the Anatolian double knot, which packs twice the material into a row and sharpens the outline of every motif standing on it.
Real Bursa silk is carried inside the pattern, not across the whole surface, so the shine appears only where the drawing goes. A pale field of this kind will show what a dark one hides, and in a house with a dog or a hallway that comes straight off the street that is worth deciding about in advance. Made at Çınar Halı in Türkiye, whose designs have won awards outside the country. Erzurum greasy fleece for the pile, with genuine Bursa silk reserved for the motifs. Tied with the Anatolian double knot, which is slow to weave and hard-wearing afterward. 167 × 229 cm (5'6" × 7'6"), which suits a middling room, a study, or the end of a bed. Powder and dusty rose flowers over beige, closing into dense floral bands at the border. Pale grounds take more keeping than dark ones. Washing belongs to a specialist and nowhere else. A single piece. Ten years of low sun will pull the beige a shade warmer, and the rose in the flowers will go the same way with it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
