Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pink roses at the four corners, Bursa silk in the pattern
First shearing is the wool a lamb gives up the first time it is clipped, and it is the softest fleece the animal will ever produce. That is what this rug is made of: a cream handwoven wool and silk rug from the Harem Series, 158 × 237 cm (5'2" × 7'9"), with a fine medallion at the center and pink rose bunches in the corners. The medallion is plain and small for its field, ringed by thin branching stems, and the restraint at the center is what makes the border possible — a wide band of olive green and gold, worked densely, with the roses appearing at each corner where a classical composition usually puts nothing at all.
The eye rests in the middle and travels at the edges, and the composition is built to make that happen. Silk is spun into the pink and cream passages in particular, and it is where the faint moving shine on the surface comes from. Çınar Halı in Türkiye wove it — one of the handful of Turkish weaving houses known by name beyond the country — and the Harem Series is made for Halıcızade out of its award-winning work.
The fleece is Erzurum's first shearing; the silk is genuine Bursa silk, which is scarcer now than it was. The Anatolian double knot takes twice as long to weave as a single knot at the same density, and that is the whole reason a rug like this outlasts its first owner.
Professional washing keeps the colors where they are. Çınar Halı knotted it in Türkiye for the Harem Series. First-shearing Erzurum fleece with genuine Bursa silk through the pattern. 158 × 237 cm (5'2" × 7'9") — a middling salon, a study, a bedroom. A small central medallion inside a wide olive green and gold border. Pink rose bunches worked into the four corners of the border. The Anatolian double knot: twice the weaving time of a single knot at the same density. The shine sits in the pink and cream passages, where the silk is. One piece. Rugs like this end up in institutions because they last, and in houses because of the roses.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
