Black Abstract Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Heritage Series

Black, gray and white run into one another here the way wet paint does, and the rug underneath that surface is a loom-woven one: wool and viscose above, a cotton foundation below. In feet it is 6'7" × 9'10"; in metric, 200 × 300 cm.

01The origin of the pattern

It is woven in the Oushak district, and the Heritage series is made in small numbers. There is no motif to find and no border to read. What the eye gets instead is depth — the black falls away, the grays turn over each other, and a chalk-white edge surfaces where two of them meet.

02When you walk in

Cross the room and a different layer comes up; stand still and the whole thing settles again into near-black. The viscose is what does this. Cellulose fiber takes light unevenly, so a dark ground stops being flat and starts having weather in it. The making is split.

03Coming off the loom

Machines carry the structure through the field, and the closing work is done by hand in the same district, which is what loom weaving means and why the hand of it is nearer a knotted rug than a machine-made one.

04What Wool does

The pile sits low and packed on a cotton foundation, so it sheds very little and a vacuum gets across it in one pass. One honest limitation: the Heritage patterns are run in small batches, and when a size sells through we cannot promise the same design back. Loom-woven in the Oushak district of western Türkiye, machine structure with hand finishing. Wool and viscose share the surface; the foundation underneath is cotton. Black, gray and white worked as an abstract field, with no border and no repeat. The viscose gives the dark tones a shift between matt and bright as you move. 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10") — a salon size, enough to seat a full sofa group on. Low pile, low shed, easy to run a vacuum over. Made in limited runs; the design is not always repeatable in a given size. Professional washing when it needs more than a vacuum. In a room of pale walls and light oak it behaves like a hole cut in the floor, which is either exactly what the room needed or the last thing it wanted.
