Round Black Plain Loom-Woven Viscose Rug, Sekoya Series

Black, round and plain, with a single narrow gray stripe running the circumference and nothing inside it. Loom-woven in Türkiye in viscose over a cotton foundation, in three diameters, the largest 200 cm (6'7") across, with the Halıcızade tree of life worked small into one part of the surface. The series borrows its name from the sequoia, which grows to between fifty and eighty meters and outlasts nearly everything beside it; what the rug takes from the tree is the idea of a form that needs no decorating.

The gray stripe is the only drawn element, and it does the job of an edge without becoming a border. A one-color floor is a generous thing in a furnished room: a chair with a good outline, a low table, a lamp with a shape worth seeing — all of them read better with nothing underneath them competing. Viscose over cotton is a deliberate combination.

02Coming off the loom

The cotton foundation gives the structure and the viscose gives a low shine and a slip under the hand, and the loom-woven method brings machine knotting and hand finishing to the same frame. There is one thing to know before choosing black: a dark viscose surface shows lint and pale dust more plainly than a patterned rug does, so it asks to be vacuumed often and washed rarely.
