02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Silk yarn

Silk takes dye into the fiber rather than carrying it on the surface. As the pile shortens the tone does not lighten.

02

Authentic pattern layout

Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is cream.

03

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.

Cream Handwoven Soumak Kilim in Wool and Silk — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

This one has been owned before, and the shop says so: a handwoven soumak kilim in cream, 117 × 184 cm (3'10" × 6'0"), worked in wool and cotton with silk through the motifs. Soumak is a wrapping technique rather than a plain flatweave, which is why the surface stands up in fine ridges. The drawing is the old authentic sort — hooks, stars and stepped panels set out in bands rather than gathered around one center, with the cream ground doing the work of holding them apart.

01What Wool does

Silk appears in the motifs alone and nowhere in the field, so the piece reads as a matt wool weaving with a few lines through it that catch light and shift as you cross the room. On a pale ground that contrast is far more visible than it would be on a dark one. Wool and cotton with silk, wrapped by hand.

02Knot by knot, by hand

A soumak takes considerably longer to make than a plain flatweave, since every pass has to be wound around the warp rather than thrown across it, and what comes off the loom has real weight and no pile at all.

03What the yarn is

This piece has had a previous life and should be read that way: a surface with no pile shows where it has been folded and where it has been walked, and the silk will have given up some of its first brightness.

04The mark of slow weaving

Silk in any proportion rules out a domestic wash. How is soumak different from a kilim? Both are flat weavings with no pile, but a kilim is made by passing the colored weft straight across the warp, while soumak winds each weft around the warp threads before moving on. The winding leaves a raised, ribbed face and a much heavier cloth, and it lets a weaver draw a finer line. What does previously owned mean on a kilim? It means the piece was in use in a household before it came here rather than arriving new from the loom.

05Coming off the loom

Expect the surface to carry fold marks and some evenness of wear, and expect the colors to sit a little quieter than they did when it was first made. Handwoven soumak; wool and cotton with silk in the motifs. Banded hooks, stars and stepped panels over a cream ground. 117 × 184 cm (3'10" × 6'0"). Ribbed, flat and heavy in the hand, with no pile. Previously owned, with the wear that implies. Specialist cleaning only, because of the silk. A single piece. A used weaving is the only kind that can show what the technique looks like after thirty years of somebody's feet, which is information a new one cannot give.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?
