Knotted by hand
Every knot in this rug is tied by hand; instead of the exact repetition of a machine loom you get the slight differences the hand leaves behind. No two areas come out the same.

Second-hand from Bünyan: cream ground, flowers in a frame

Wool pile absorbs sound; in rooms with hard floors the echo drops noticeably. In a high-ceilinged living room you hear the difference on the first day.
Authentic, Classic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a cream ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Second-hand from Bünyan: cream ground, flowers in a frame
Somebody else owned this first, which is the whole of its interest: Cream Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Bünyan Rug, second-hand, 197 × 288 cm (6'6" × 9'5"), knotted at Bünyan in central Anatolia with a floral field inside a full border, wool above cotton. A rug that has spent years on a floor is a different object from one still in a warehouse. The pile has been walked into its lie, so the surface carries a low even sheen along the traffic line and stands taller toward the edges.
The cream ground has picked up the faint warmth that wool acquires from handling, which cannot be applied in a finishing bath. None of that is damage — it is the condition a new rug spends its first ten years working toward, and here it has arrived already. Bünyan has been weaving finely knotted rugs on cotton foundations since the nineteenth century, and this drawing follows the local habit: flowers arranged inside a frame rather than scattered loose, with the border carrying a smaller repeat of its own.
Buying second-hand means buying an object whose history nobody wrote down, and accepting what comes with that — a thinner passage somewhere, a repair, an edge that is not quite even. Look at it as a used object rather than as a discounted new one.
Get it washed before it is laid down. Knotted at Bünyan in central Anatolia, wool above cotton. Cream ground, floral field, a border repeating a smaller figure. 197 × 288 cm (6'6" × 9'5"). Second-hand: the pile is already walked in and carries a low sheen. Expect a thinner passage, an old repair or an uneven edge somewhere in it. Its history is not documented and is not offered as one. One wash by a professional, and then it is ready. One piece. Most of the work of breaking in a wool rug has been done by whoever had it last, and none of it can be bought new at any price.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
