Red Yahyalı Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

This rug has been owned before, and the house says so on the label rather than in the small print. A hand-knotted Yahyalı, wool throughout, 112 × 210 cm (3'8" × 6'11"), red-led and multicolored, from the Yahyalı district of Kayseri in central Anatolia.

01The tone of the ground

It is offered as a second-hand piece, and there is exactly one. Yahyalı rugs are among the better-known Anatolian village types, worked in a dense geometric field with red as the dominant ground, and they were made in quantity for domestic use rather than for export, which is why so many turn up used. Red here is not decorative — in the Anatolian palette it is the ground color that everything else is judged against, and a Yahyalı with a weak red is a Yahyalı that has spent too long in the sun.

02The mark of slow weaving

This one still carries the field at strength, with the rest of the colors reading as figures on it rather than as a competing scheme. Hand-knotted wool pile, wool foundation, made in Türkiye. A used rug should be bought for what it is: the pile is shorter than it left the loom, and it is shorter unevenly, along the lines people walked. What that buys is a surface with no plushness left to lose and a drawing that has come closer to the foundation and therefore reads sharper.

Check the fringes and the selvedges, which are where a used rug shows its history first. It should be professionally washed before it goes down, and after that it wants nothing but a vacuum.
